EPM Implementation Phases
EPM Envisioning

Typically this will be a 2 days workshop, to kick off your EPM initiative.
The key objectives are:

  • Identifying your primary business challenges.
  • Understanding your current and desired level of project management maturity.
  • Developing a roadmap of features & capabilities for the EPM System.
  • Understanding the impact of your EPM Initiative in your organisation, your people, your processes and your technology.

Various software demonstrations are part of the workshop, in order to provide you with an idea of the key features of the Microsoft EPM Solution that are available.
The results of this phase will be documented by Program Framework in the ProFIM ‘EPM Vision’ document.

EPM Realisation

The Realisation phase aims to create a Proof-of-Concept implementation of the EPM solution, which can be used as an iterative development environment and test bed, before advancing to a Pilot EPM deployment. This phase includes the following key activities:

  • Planning for the EPM solution:
The planning activities focus on the accumulation of detailed requirements and their conversion into specifications for the business processes, Microsoft Office Project 2003 configuration settings, and system architecture.
  • Development of the EPM solution:
The development activities include installing the servers and software, configuring Microsoft Office Project Web Access 2003 and Microsoft Office Project Professional 2003 settings, and document the EPM configuration.
  • Testing of the EPM solution:
Testing verifies that prior to deployment, all EPM system functions are behaving as expected.

These activities are iterative, and may overlap. The Realisation Phase will be governed by the ProFIM EPM Initiative Project Structure document. Various other documents will be generated to provide full documentation backup to the EPM project

EPM deployment

The purpose of the EPM deployment phase is to deploy the EPM solution for a live production project. Typically this will be for one Pilot project first, followed by the Full EPM deployment to the whole targeted user community.
As part of this phase, all users must be trained on new or revised business processes and Microsoft Office Project functions. End-user desktops are also configured to use Microsoft Office Project tools.
The Proof-of-Concept EPM system may have been installed on an interim server, in which case the production deployment will require another hardware and software installation.
